  90. Subject: 1) What is Islam?    
  91.  
  92.     The word "Islam"  in  Arabic  Language  means  "submission"  & "peace" A
  93.     Muslim is a person who submits to  the  will  of Allah and finds therein
  94.     peace. Islam is derived from the Arabic word "salaam" meaning peace. 
  95.  
  96.     Who are the  Muslims?  The  common  answer  is  "the  Arabs."  This is a
  97.     mistaken impression that is true  only  insofar as Islam arose among the
  98.     Arabs, its Prophet and many of its adherents were and are Arabs, and its
  99.     scripture, the Holy Quran, must be recited  in original Arabic form. The
  100.     Arabs comprise only 25 % of the  present  population of Islam. They form
  101.     majority of the population  in  roughly  thirty-six  (36)  countries and
  102.     nearly half of the population in five  others. The estimated strength of
  103.     Islam is estimated to be one  billion people,  almost one fifth of world
  104.     population.  Islam  is  the  world's   third   largest religion,  behind
  105.     Christianity and Buddhism,and its  present  rate  of growth and vitality
  106.     rivals both traditions. 
  107.  
  108.     Muslims represent many races and socioeconomic settings. There have been
  109.     however significant divisions of opinion  within the umma  (commonwealth 
  110.     of Islam or  Islamic Community). Despite these differences, Islam brings 
  111.     unity by incorporating divergent interpretations of basic beliefs. 
  112.  
  113.     SUNNI: The recorded practice  and  teachings  of  Prophet  Mohammad were
  114.     early regarded as his Sunnah,  meaning  'path' or 'way.' These traditions
  115.     became powerful symbols for the Islamic religion, models of right belief
  116.     and practice. The collection of  Prophet  Mohammad's  sayings are called
  117.     "Hadith" comprising Sunnah or  "authoritative  examples."  These required
  118.     further interpretations  and application  to  a variety of situations of
  119.     everyday life. 
  120.  
  121.     Majority of  Muslims  following  Sunnah  of  Prophet  Mohammad are termed
  122.     "Sunnis." Islam developed  four schools of jurisprudence  whose functions
  123.     were to decide upon the proper  application  of  Holy Quran and Sunnah to
  124.     virtually all aspects of life of the community. Each of the four schools
  125.     takes its name from early jurist  to  whom later followers trace many of
  126.     the school's distinctive opinions. The four schools are: 
  127.  
  128.             1. Hanifi's    (after Abu Hanifa,         d.767)
  129.             2. Maliki's    (after Malik ibn Anas,     d.795)
  130.             3. Shafi'is    (after Muhammad al-Shafi'i d.819)
  131.               & 4. Hanbali's   (after Ahmad ibn Hanbal    d.855)
  132.

  134.     Acceptable differences of  interpretation  exist among the four schools,
  135.     and a Sunni may seek to conform  his  or her pratice of Islam to any one
  136.     of them. Matters  pertaining  to  marriage,  divorce,  inheritance,  and
  137.     proper government come under the jurisdiction of Islamic Law. 
  138.  
  139.     The learned scholars of law are called "Ulema."They are highly respected
  140.     for their learning in  the  religious  sciences.  Islam has no clergy or
  141.     priesthood as such. The basic principles  of Islamic Law are established
  142.     by the following: 
  143.  
  144.             i)    The Holy Quran
  145.             ii)    The Prophet's Sunnah
  146.             iii)    The learned consensus of Ulema
  147.             iv)    Reasoning by analogy from accepted 
  148.                     interpretations of i) & ii) to new 
  149.                 problems not directly addressed therein.
  150.  
  151.     All of the four above form a concept  of revelation of God's will to the
  152.     community of Islam. This  concept  is  called,  Shari'a, it is more than
  153.     scripture, it implies  a  composite  source  of  teaching  and  practice
  154.     involving the  Holy  Quran,  the  Sunnah  of  the  Prophet  Muhammad  and
  155.     authoritative human interpretation and application. 
  156.  
  157.     SHI'IA: A significant minority of  Muslims,  10-15  %, differ on certain
  158.     religious and political  matters  almost  since  the beginning of Islam.
  159.     They are known as Shi'ia 's. The historical and religious differences do
  160.     not obscure the broad lines of agreement between Shi'ias and Sunnis. 
  161.  
  162.     Shi'ias differ  little  from  Sunnis   in  belief  and  practice.  Their
  163.     differences lie mainly in the  modes  of  leadership and piety. Although
  164.     Islam united the Arabs of North and  South under the same banner but the
  165.     cultural and traditional differences remained strong and surfaced at the
  166.     time of choosing the successors of Prophet Muhammad after His death. The
  167.     majority believed in choosing  from  the  closest  companions of Prophet
  168.     Muhammad while others sought guidance  in political and religous matters
  169.     from Hazart Ali, Prophet  Muhammad's  cousin  and son-in-law. Hazart Ali
  170.     was chosen as the fourth Caliph  (leader  of  Islamic community) but was
  171.     assassinated in 661. The civil  strife  that resulted left and indelible
  172.     mark upon Islamic Umma (community). 
  173.  
  174.     Shi'ias believe Prophet  Muhammad  passed  on  a significant part of his
  175.     teachings directly to  Hazart  Ali,  and  hence  to  subsequent  Imams (
  176.     sprititual leaders). Although the twelfth and last Imam disappeared late
  177.     in the ninth century, expected to  return  before the Judgement Day. The
  178.     Shia Ulema carry on the  distinctive  teachings and interpretations they
  179.     trace back through the Imams to  Prophet  Muhammad. The teachings of the
  180.     sixth Imam, Jafar al-Sadiq (d.765)  became  the  basis of Jafari schools
  181.     among Sunnis. 
  182.  
  183.     The emotional intensity that characterizes  Shi'ia beliefs culminates on
  184.     the tenth day of Muharram (the first month of Islamic calendar). On this
  185.     date in Karbala, Iraq, in  680,  Hazart  Husayn,  son  of Hazart Ali and
  186.     grandson of  Prophet  Muhammad,  was  brutally  murdered  by  troops  of
  187.     Ummayyad Caliph,Yazid. For nine days,  Yazid's troops besieged the camps
  188.     and deprived Hazart Husayn and his followers  (72 of them) of any water.
  189.     Remembering the tragedy  of  Hazart  Husayn  on  every  year  on 10th of
  190.     Muharram is done by Sunnis as well as Shi'ias.

  196.     FIVE PILLARS OF ISLAM 
  197.  
  198.     The pillars of Islam are considered  obligatory for all Muslims although
  199.     Sunni and Shia schools of law have slight variations. 
  200.  
  201.     The pillars of Islam  play  important  roles  in intellectual and social
  202.     dimensions of Islamic life. The five pillars of faith and practice are: 
  203.  
  204.         1. The Shahada (Witness)
  205.         2. The Salat   (Prayer)
  206.         3. The Zakat   (Alms)
  207.         4. The Sawm or Siyam (Fasting)
  208.         5. The Hajj    (Pilgrimage)
  209.  
  210.  
  211.     SHAHADA: (Witness) The  Shahada  is:  
  212.  
  213.     In Arabic "La ilah ha il Allah, Muhammadan Rasul-Allah"
  214.     Translation: "(There is) No diety but Allah (and) Muhammad is His Messenger"
  215.                 or 
  216.                  "There  is  no  God but Allah" and "Muhammad is His Apostle" 
  217.  
  218.     Islam is one of the three monotheistic  religions to arise in the Middle
  219.     East; along with the other two -  Judaism  and Christianity- it stresses
  220.     the oneness and uniqueness of God. The world 'Allah' means 'The God.' 
  221.  
  222.     The second phrase  of  the  Shahada  declares  that  Muhammad  is  God's
  223.     messenger  to  humankind.  Accepting  the   Judaeo-Christian   Biblical
  224.     tradition in large part, Muslims believe  that God had sent prophets and
  225.     messengers to other nations in the  past  with the same revealed message
  226.     Muhammad was to recite to  the  Arabs.  Muhammad's  mission  brought the
  227.     final positing of divine  Truth,  and  thus  Muhammad is regarded as the
  228.     "Seal of the Prophets." 
  229.  
  230.  
  231.     SALAT: (Payer)  Performing  daily  prayers  is  an  act of communication
  232.     between humans and God. Five daily  prayers  are  considered  a duty for
  233.     all Muslims,and on  these  occasions  preparations  in ritual purity are
  234.     required. The prayers are Fajr (early morning before the sun rise), Zuhr
  235.     (afternoon), Asr  (later  afternoon),  Maghrib  (after  sunset) and Isha
  236.     (evening). The prayers must  be  said  while  facing in the direction of
  237.     Mecca. The congregational prayer  of  Friday afternoon is compulsory and
  238.     must be said in a Mosque, Muslim's  place  of worship. There is a sermom
  239.     and then the prayers in uniform rows. 
  240.  
  241.     ZAKAT: (Alms) The Zakat is  a  form  of  giving  to  those  who are less
  242.     fortunate. It is obligatory upon all Muslims to give 2.5 % of wealth and
  243.     assets each year (in excess of  what  is  required) to the poor. This is
  244.     done before the beginning of  the  month  of  Muharram, the first of new
  245.     year. Giving the Zakat is  considered  an act of worship because it is a
  246.     form of offering thanks to God for the  means of material well-being one
  247.     has acquired. 
  248.  
  249.     SAWM or SIYAM:  (FASTING)  Another  form  of  offering  thanks to God is
  250.     fasting. It is duty to all  Muslims  to  fast  during the ninth month of
  251.     Islamic calendar, Ramadan. During this month, Muslims refrain from food,
  252.     drink during daylight. Excepts are  those  ill  health, pregnant women &
  253.     travelers. One is to make up lost  days  of fasting at a later time. The
  254.     time of fasting is from just  before  sunrise  to just after sunset. The
  255.     breaking of fast is joyous occasion.  Sawm during Ramadan or any time is
  256.     recognized as physically demanding but spiritually rewarding. 
  257.  
  258.     HAJJ: (Pilgrimage) The pilgrimage  season begins in the tenth month, the
  259.     month following Ramadan, and lasts  through the middle of twelveth month,
  260.     Dhu al-Hijja. This fifth pillar requires  all Muslims who are physically
  261.     and financially capable to make  Hajj  to Mecca once during their lives.
  262.     The actual rites and prayers take place  at the scred Ka'ba in Mecca and
  263.     at nearby locations. Muslims  associate  the  origin of the Hajj and the
  264.     founding of the Ka'ba  with  the  prophet  Abraham.  Nearly  two million
  265.     Muslims perform Hajj each year.

  269.     JIHAD: (Striving) Although it is not  a pillar of Islam but is a duty in
  270.     one form or another. The most  common  media misconception is of calling
  271.     Jihad a 'Holy War.' The  general  meaning  of  the term is "striving for
  272.     moral and  religious  perfection."  The  broader  meaning  of  this term
  273.     encompasses one's life and community.  The constant struggle of striving
  274.     to remain on the path of Islam by  observing  the  above five pillars of
  275.     Islam is Jihad. One who strives is Mujahid.
  276.  
  277.     Being a Mujahid, a striver for moral and religious perfection,  involves
  278.     numerous forms of public  and  private  devotion  that  charaterizes the
  279.     'practice' of islam. This includes  respecting  the  dietry laws against
  280.     eating pork and drinking alcohol, respecting parents and elders, helping
  281.     to provide for  close  relatives  and  kins,  giving  to  the  poor  and
  282.     disadvantaged. On the other side, theft,  murder, fornication, adultery,
  283.     lying, cheating, wrongly accusing  or  testifying are strictly forbidden
  284.     by Shari'a (Islamic Law).

  286.     In technical sense, Islam means 'the pratice of the religious and social
  287.     duties' outlined above. 
  288.  
  289.     IMAN: (Faith) The faith, like Five Pillars, can be divided in six parts.
  290.     It means belief in the following: 
  291.  
  292.     1. God and His Attributes
  293.     2. Prophets
  294.     3. Angles
  295.     4. Sacred Books
  296.     5. The Judgement Day        
  297.     6. Predestination

  686.   The current moderators post an announcement for new moderators on S.R.I.
  687. All interested applicants are sent a copy of guidelines and a list of questions.
  688. References from others are appreciated. Each new moderator has unanimous vote
  689. of current moderators. The new moderators must:

  691. 1. Have some understanding of Islam (not necessarily a Muslim). 
  692. 2. Agree with guidelines of Soc.Religion.Islam.
  693. 3. Be able to recognize flames/insults.
  694. 4. Have experience with USENET, preferrably a reader of SRI and have taken

  696. 5. Be willing to volunteer at least 2-4 hrs of time for S.R.I. per week.

  714.     SRI MODERATOR RULES:

  716.     This does not cover all the established  rules for moderators of SRI but
  717.     gives a clear picture of need for such rules. These rules have developed
  718.     over time & voted by the moderators.

  720.     A. CONFIDENTIALITY: 1. Internal discussion among the moderators must not
  721.     be revealed to a third party. All votings will be confidential as well. 
  722.  
  723.     B.  BEHAVIOR:  Professional   language   &  behavior  is  expected  when
  724.     addressing the readers & moderator colleagues. 
  725.  
  726.     C. SUBMISSIONS: 
  727.  
  728.     i. To: religion-Islam-request: 
  729.         Any articles sent to  religion-islam-request@ncar.ucar.edu  reaches  all
  730.         moderators. Such articles will be  reviewed  by the coordinator only, to
  731.         avoid duplications. 
  732.     ii. Directly Sent to a Moderator: 
  733.     It will not be regarded as an official submission to SRI.

  735.     D. COORDINATOR:

  737.     One of the moderators will be  fully  dedicated  for for this positions.

  743.     v. Represent SRI moderator panel

  751.     E. SUBMISSIONS:

  753.     i. Review of submissions be held within 48 hrs (weekdays) and 72 hrs for
  754.        holidays or weekends. 
  755.     ii. Acknowledgment must be made at  the  time of receipt and at the time
  756.         of posting of an article. 
  757.     iii. Not sure: If not sure on making a decision, get a vote/opinion from
  758.          other colleagues. 
  759.     iv. Common Questions: can be resolved consulting 'reference guide.' 
  760.     v. Rejection Notices: All rejection  notices will be Bcc' or CC'd to the
  761.        rest of the moderators, along with a rational of rejection. 
  762.     vi. Approval Notices: All approved articles  when posted will be sent to
  763.         the author with a cc the coordinator.

  766.     F. GUIDELINES: 
  767.     i. Submitted articles must be: 
  768.         - Directly or indirectly related  to  Islam 
  769.          - No flames/personal attacks or insults 
  770.     ii. Assumptions: 
  771.         - Proper USENET format (79  column  in  width,less  quoted text) 
  772.         - Not a 'test message' or a blank message 
  773.  
  774.     G.PROBLEMS: 
  775.     i. Lost  Articles:  or  'Second  Attempts'  will  be  forwarded  to  the
  776.        coordinator. 
  777.     ii. Administrative: queries  on  SRI,  asking  for status on the article
  778.         submitted will be forwarded to the coordinator. 
  779.     iii. Rejections: If a  reader  differs  with  a moderator. The moderator
  780.          must give it a second review. If  the  differences  persist,forward 
  781.      the case to the coordinator to a peer review. 
  782.  
  783.     H.VOTING: 
  784.     i. Issues:For status  of  an  article  and  for  SRI  related  issues, a
  785.        majority voting decides the outcome. 
  786.     ii. Change of Status: of a  moderator.  For a no-confidence vote, or for
  787.         new moderators, unanimous vote is a must. 
  788.     iii.Voting will be initiated by the  coordinator. All votes will be send
  789.         to him within 48 hrs (72  hrs  weekends/holidays)  or 'Abstain' will 
  790.     be recorded. Votes will be  tallied  and  results  will be announced 
  791.     by the coordinator. 
  792.     iv. Binding: All  majority  voting  decisions  are  binding  on  the 
  793.         moderators strictly. 
  794.  
  795.     I.NEW MODERATORS: 
  796.     i. Initiate: Coordinator may initiate  the selection procedure by making
  797.        a solicitation on SRI or as a result of a request for a reader. 
  798.     ii. Criteria: Some knowledge of Islam, fairness, honest, willing to work
  799.         with a team, spare time, working knowledge of USENET,willing to work 
  800.     in accordance to the parameters of the forum. 
  801.     iii.Questionnaire:A questionnaire is sent to all the applicants with some
  802.         basic questions based upon above criteria 
  803.     iv. Affidavit:  An  affidavit  is  obtained  to  ensure  in  writing the
  804.         intentions to  abide by  the guidelines  and  agree to  be accept  a 
  805.      unanimous vote against him/her. 
  806.     v. Final voting: is conducted among  the moderators. Unanimous voting is
  807.        required in favor of the applicant. 
  808.     vi.There will be probationary  period  of  upto 3 months, during which a
  809.        majority voting can remove the new moderator. 
  810.  
  811.     J:EMERGENCIES: 
  812.     i. If coordinator can not  be  on-line  for  more  than 48 hrs due to an
  813.     emergency situation. One of the predesignated moderator,will temporarily
  814.     assume the role of the coordinator.  If predesignated moderator is also
  815.     not  available,  any  other   moderator  may  take  up  the  role  of  a
  816.     coordinator.

  818.     K:LEAVE RULES: 
  819.     i. After a leave of 3 months, a  moderator  must  be reconfirmed for the
  820.        position. 
  821.     ii. One may take upto  three  weeks  (cumulative)  of  leave  every  six
  822.         months. 
  823.     iii. Other moderators must be notified in advance. 
  824.
